Game Club gets new gear

Xbox 360

The library has purchased a Move-enabled PS3 and a Kinect-enabled Xb0x 360 for use in programs just like the YA Game Club. This is in addition to the Wii console that we already own and have used in the past.

We’ll project on to the big screen (with surround sound) whichever system people who come to the program are interested in playing most. (Don’t worry, we’re not locked in to using any one console over another for the whole 2 hours. All three game consoles will be out and ready to quickly switch over to the projection.

By the way, we do have four wireless controllers for every console, so there should be plenty of opportunities for you to get into the game in the 2-hour duration of the Game Club program.

The library has a breadth of video games to choose from on any given day of the Game Club program, which the Young Adult librarian will be selecting from for the program. PS3

Don’t forget that we have a collection of board games and good table-space for playing group board and card games as well. There’s no slighting the analog games at YA Game Club. Analog power! All are welcome and included here.

The next YA Game Club session is Tuesday May 22 from 6:30-8:30pm. See you there!

YA Game Club in April and May

video game

board game

The first session of this new program for teens and young adults is on Tuesday April 24th from 6:30-8:30pm, followed by a second session on Tuesday May 22nd from 6:30-8:30pm.

The YA Game Club is simple. It’s all about teens and young adults hanging out and playing board, card, and video games. The library has an assortment of board games available for the program, but feel free to bring your own (D&D or MTG cards, anyone?). We also have PS3 (Move capabilities included) and Wii systems which will be projected on the big screen for the program, and we will soon add an Xbox 360 with Kinect capabilities to the mix as well. Games that can be played will be selected from the library’s collection.

(Yes, the library has a growing collection of video games for all ages for the PS3, Xbox360, and Wii systems. Games can be checked out for a week at a time on a first-come, first-served basis–in other words, no requests are allowed on the items in this collection so that there is more of a selection on the shelves when you come in to the library.)

Back to the game club: See you there, social gamers.

YA Book Club to discuss “family” in May 2012

family by Micol Ostow

I just finished reading this episodic verse novel. It’s a bit harrowing and terrifying, given it’s based upon the Manson Family situation in the late 1960s, and the fact that it is the personal story of a broken young woman being pulled into His (in this case, Henry’s) orbit.

Let’s talk about it all–the book, the real life events upon which it is based, and cult dynamics, in general–in our YA Book Club for May 2012. Tuesday May 8th at 7pm, to be exact.

Request your copy of the book today.

YA Book Club to Discuss “Jasper Jones” in April 2012

Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey

I just finished reading this. It is–to me–a flawless book.  (I’ll reserve my detailed reasoning on this point for the discussion in April.) It received a 2012 Printz Honor for excellence in young adult literature. I’m surprised it didn’t go on to clinch the actual award. Whatever other book that won must indeed be good to choose over this one.

In any event, this is the pick for our April YA Book Club discussion here at Guilderland Public Library, to be held in the Tawasentha Room on Tuesday April 10 at 7:00pm. The book discussion geared toward ages 13-21.

I know, it seems a little early to be talking up something happening in April, but I’m calling attention to it now so that you have time to get a copy, read it, digest it, dwell on it before April 10th. Request the first available copy of this book for yourself today. I look forward to seeing you on April 10th, and hearing from you your thoughts and feelings about Jasper Jones (who has come to Charlie Bucktin’s window late one night)
